Sanderson, M.A. The Inspector-General of Hospitals (Dr. Valintine) lias intimated to Horowhenua County Council that the Minister for Public Health will be μ-lad to receive a deputation from tho council (regarding, hospiial dues and other hospital matters), on a date to be arranged after Easter. On Easter Monday in«>Ut tho local lodge of Druids will open their fortnightly series of ladies' nights dances. Arrangements in connection with this function are well in hand, and judging by the popularity of these functions last year the opening one should be a success. The nights arranged foi these dances is every second Friday. Among special Good Friday attractions in Levin will be the grand organ recital and sacred concert at the Presbyterian Church in the evening. The organ selections in themselves, which will be played by Mr Jesse White, should attract all lovers o± good music. Mr White will play, among others, Mendelssohn's "War March of tho Priests," fantasia on "Abide With Me," and the soul-stirring "Hallelujah Chorus , '_ from "The Messiah." There will be a quartette by the Misses Remington, Messrs Porteotts and Pringle, while solos will be sung by Miss IS r etta Smith and Mrs Randerson, Miss. Remington ('cello) and Messrs Mottershead and Porteous. The committee of (of Horowhen.ua County Council) set up to investigate concerning party-telephone- systems, has been writing to various county councils for details. A letter from Wairoa County Council, read at to-day's meeting of Horowhenua County Council, sets out that that body .had not gone in extensively for party telephones, and had not erected any lines under powers given in The Country Telephones Act of 1912. The council had a line four and a-half miles long, between Wairoa and Frasertown, t<s , carry a number of Avires vrhere thoy converged at road junctions, in order that the roadway would not be taken up with a network of linos and poles. The cost of this section miles long) was £33$ 13s 4d, and it was used by thirteen subscribers, wFTo would pay (U per centum interest and sinking fund until the full debt was liquidated. The work was paid for out of the revenue of the riding in which the work was done. Shannon's sanitation requires improvement (according to a letter sent by Dr. Chesson, district, health officer) to Horowhenua County Council. T)r. Chesson says thai a departmental report furnished to him makes it appear that sanitation matters are by no means satisfactory, ;uid (lie question arises whether it \\ouhl not be possible to arrange for a water supply and drainage for tho township. The health officer concludes his letter ils follows: -■■"There should be as little delay as possible in the provision of a water supply, and I should also urge the immediate consideration of drainage. This seems to be a rapidlygrowing town, and it is only a question of time when this can be no longer stood aside. I should be glad to hear tho Horowhenua County Council's views on tins subject. I have, pte, Herbert Chesson, district health officer."

Following is the Horowhenua cricket team, selected to tour Wellington: Tremewan (captain), Judd, Berquist, Butterworth, Cook, Whflriey, Mullins, Sloan, Hotter, Young, Windley. Ihero is in Auckland a preacher of the gospel of happiness who drives a city dustcart, says the General in the Herald. Probably there were "no shillings in the pockets of his childhood's pantaloons," and it is certain that "the vanity of riches forms no part of his conceit," yet he has i glad soul which most people might envy. His horse is superlatively Clydesdale, and probably never saw a field-gun, much less a cavalry regiment, but it pleases tEe merry dustman to command his steed in military terms. <r ßy tEe right, quick march!" says he, when one heap of sweepings is picked up, and ,like a horso of the Lifo Guards the ponderous animal moves off, while the driver shoulders his shovel as if it were the latest magazine rifle, and marches beside the turn out. At the next heap he orders "Halt!" and instantly the old horse puts his weight into the breeching. Several times have I witnessed the absurdly amusing, performance Invariably, everyone in the vicinity goos away smiling, and the dustman appears to rejoice in the fact.
