A band of Wickliffe preachers,, headed by Mr J. A. Jvensit, caused a disturbance in Holy Trinity Church, Hoxton, London, on Good Friday morning. During "tilie vonoration of the Cross" members of the ohoir were apparently about to kiss a cross which Jiad bo'en unveiled when Mr Kensit shouted out: "This idolatry in the Church of England must cease." Some seuffl/ing followed, in the course of which the cross was broken. When the police appeared the demonstrators left the church. A Chronicle reporter recollects a similar incident ocoiwing during an outside procession in connection with an Anglican Church in Hoxton (which is in the north-east of London). The Vicar and the choir in blue cassocks and white surplices, with crosses and crucfixes, were chanting one of the more dolorous litanies of the Church when a- working man broke through the crowd, and. seizing the crucifix, which the Vicar was carrying, smashed it in two. For his solicitude for the "good old caaise," he was next day fined 40s (including costs), by one of the Metropolitan magistrates—a. fine which the members of a local Orange Lodge immediately liquidated, in addition to giving the "patriot" nxi extra "brand."

Vice-Admiral Shimannira, comma nder of the Japanese squadron now en route to Spithead to. participate in the naval review in. honor of the Coronation of King George V., was interviewed at Colombo on, May 2 on board his flagship, the first-class armoured cnuiser Kurram;i. Having described as ridiculous nonsense, at least as far as Japan was concerned j the recent rumors of war between Japan and America, the Admiral remarked that the establishment of 'the Australian Navy was undoubtedly a very good thing. The new navy would fulfil a useful purpose in the Pacific. He hadspent some time in Australia, and found it a. delightful country, with charming people, whose hospitality was boundless. He had been particularly struck with this feature of their character. The peculiar rumor that Japan had designs on New Caledonia was, he said, even more ridiculous than the idea of a war betAveen Japan and America.
