THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND THE HORSES.
To tho Editor. Sir, —T was more than surprised nib the light and indifFereiit way some of tho councillors treated it ho Rev. Cecil Smith's letter. Tho 10-ast they could have done was to have shown respcct to the cloth, if not the man, and liavo treated tho letter in a courteous and respectful manner. The rev. gentleman had no other courso than to lay his grievances before the County Council, m.s it is the governing power of tbo public highways. A councillor has uo right to hold anyone's letter up to ridicule ; their position demands a little moro dignity and eonrmonsense, and less of tho dramatist. No one objects to a. good joke, but there is a place and tl time for everything. Silly jokes exhibit a small mind. For a councillor to say that the rev. gentleman seems fond of running into horses, was a senseless and uncalled for remark. No doubt his reverence would prefer running into horses in preference to asses. Thb County Council's action in tho matter may be legal, but that is open to doubt. It has received warning of the danger, and in tho event of an accident happening, it may again find itself in tho samo position it occupies now over tho Tvoputaroa road.- Yours, etc., PATSY DOOLY.
