WHAT SHANNON NEEDS.

To tho Editor

Sir,— Thi> various letters in your „ columns of late relating to "Firo Brigades/' and. the manifest need of some arrangement in Shannon whereby iires can be promptly JintT effectively dealt with, cause me to .send you a note. The disastrous firo which occurred near /the railway lino in Shannon last evening caused, a crowd of sympathetic onlookers to assemble. Hut there was no chance of staying the. flames, or protecting the neighbouring houses, for want of any hose aparatus; nor was Ith'ere any organised party of helpers. .Many of the sympathisers worked energetically, even heroically, but there appeared to bo no ono to "lead off," to issue directions, to follow any method. Jf Shannon is not advanced enough to start a fully equipped brigade, surely something could be adopted as aii arrangement, pro tem. What do your Shannon readers think? Another want in Shannon is a postal delivery, within the radius of the township att least. Delivery over the counter for those outside thfc radius, also the private boxes could remain as at present. Hut it makes Shannon appear "behind the times" in having no ordinary postal delivery. Wha't is the method for our people to adopt in making known their wish? These and othor wanits of Shannon make it more emphatic than ever, that our bright little township will not make the rapid and satisfactory growth that it should be making, until some local board, or town council, ho formed to govern, develop and improve this centre of population. The vagueness and doubt as to what should he. and will be done, to fall in linb with tho dominion generally, in connection with the memorial observances of our late King's funeral on Friday next, would not <fc\'ist, if only wo had some town committee, or a civic head- of some kind to decide these points. Why should not Shannon have its mayor? Asking the opinion of your readers,—T am, etc. RESIDENT. May 17, 1910.
