The Weekly Times. MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1868. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. A NEW ZEALAND MEDAL.
Seldom have we a more: pleasing duty to fulfil than; that which we execute in transferring to our columns v a report Of a recent dehate in the Imperial Parliament on the theHome Gbvernservices of4hc j several forces employed duipmg the
late, - campaign -in vthis GoldDy,iinore particularly as there.existed so niucli of opinion in favor- ot the proposal. It has indeed been a matter- of /rnuch and no, small dissatisfaction, to the men of all pi'tds;, Who, bore the / burden of - the war,- that while the . value : . of the services , of- the officers had been recognised by promotions brevets and titles .of 08. and K. 0.8. those of the regular ; troops, blue jackets, and the Colonial forces, who-;did. tbe hard fighting and suffered the severe exposure of the campaign, have hitherto been unrecognised; while in the case of other and in many respects similar campaigns, as those ofthe Cape and the Burmah, and in China, such services have been commemorated by tlie striking of an appropriate medal, and. tbe actors in these several affairs rewarded by its bestowal There can be no question that the difficulties of the Hew Zealand campaign—its lists of killed and wounded—the total number of actions fougbt, and the bravery displayed —will hear comparison with any of these; and though somewhat tardy in its recognition of the fact, it is at least satisfactory to know that the Imperial Government notifies its intention of at- length acting in a spirit of justice and liberality.
