ALLEGED DISCOVERY OF A NEW GOLD-FIELD.
Wie were yesterday shown by Mr Haslett some specimens of quartz taken from a locality at present .not made known to.the public. Mr Haslett informs us that the leaders at whioh hispaTty are now at work have; been .found; on. Provincial Government land, and that the adjacent native land is also auriferous. The spot, too, we are told can be reached from Auckland on horseback. The- specimens .shown us were very rich, gold lying on streaks, and indicate a regular lead of gold. . 'We trust that the Provincial Government may see its way at once to grant a prospecting claim to the discoverers, and to proclaim the district a gold-field under the. Act. From the circumstances which have come to our knowledge, we are -inclined to bebelieve . that ..the. locality is .northward of Auckland.—New Zealand Herald, 6th Jnne.
