Dancing commenced . about half-past nine o’clock, .the room being comfortably filled. The riutnber increased so much afterwards, that -it was. found necessary to make use of the corridors and side rooms. . It is'estimated that at one time three hundred and' forty were .present, of, whom . neatly half were ladies. Amongst'those present, were the Speaker of the Provincial Council, the Mayors of Dunedin and Port Chalmers, (the latter being accompanied by Mrs Rolfe) 'and Mrs the widow of the ate Captain Cargill. , The music was. sup? plied by the Battalion Band, .under the the .leadership of Mr Martain. ' The refreshments which.,were ample, were supplied by Mr M'Cubhin. The rooms were well lighted, 261 burners having been fixed in two days by Messrs A. and T. Burt. Dancing was kept up with great spirit till an early hour this morning.'
