ELECTORAL ROLLS

Indifference of Many People RISK OF BEING STRUCK OFF Registrars of Electors for all electoral districts have, during the last two months, been issuing through the post forms of inquiry in order to ascertain whether electors are still in the district or have changed their address. In Hastings and Napier thousands of such inquiries have been issued, accompanied by a printed form and an addressed envelope for free reply. In spite of this, a considerable amount of indifference is apparent on the part of electors, as a large proportion of the inquiries, which have obviously been delivered by the letter carriers, have not been replied to. This will result in annoyance to many electors, as the Registrar is obliged to object to each name on the roll which is not accounted for, and steps will be taken to remove such names from the roll. As a preliminary step a notice of objection will be issued to each elector by registered letter, and if no reply is received the name will be removed.

All electors are urged to reply immediately to any electoral notices that may be received as this is the only way to make the work of cleansing the roll effective and to avoid annoyance in the future.

It is also interesting to note that quite a number of replies have been received ny the Registrar unsigned and containing no information by which the elector can be identified. Such replies are of course, of no value at all.
