HAVELOCK NORTH
TOWN BOARD MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Havelock North Town Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs J Phillips (chairman). S. Graham, E. C. Stratton, J. J. Nimon, C. Macdonald, ana ,1. 1). Heenan. The following correspondence was dealt with:— The Department of Health, Wellington, wrote that owing to a considerable reduced vote for expenditure on public health this year, it has become necessary to exercise economy in all departmental expenditure m the district. For the past two years the arrangements by which an officer of the Department has acted as the sanitary inspector has caused a considerable loss financially to the Department. a s contribution received do not bv any means equal the expenditure'entailed in carrying out the work —The chairman reported having met the Health Department officers and said public bodies were supposed to pay 60 per cent, of the expenses, but this was not done. He thought the board would increase their subsidy bv £lO next year This would mean paying out £35 instead of £25 This was agreed to. The Hawke’s Bay County Council wrote stating that with reference to the Here Here bridge, a committee consisting of the chairman and Mr. T M Chambers would confer with the Town Board at an early date. - The chairman said that Messrs Crosse and Chambers would meet Mr Joll and himself at a future date. Messrs Gill Bros, offered the board, for a reserve, the property owned bv Mr. D. Meads on the Te Ante road, of just over three acres, for the sum of £6OO or nearest offer.—To be in formed that the board had no intention ot buying a ny property. GENERAL. Messi s Stratton and, Joll were appointed a sub-committee to meet the School Committee and discuss the matter of the concrete pitch already laid down. The consulting electrical engineer reported that he had visited the power house at Maraetotara and found everything working well and in good order. Everything was well cared for by the inspector. Dog registrations were fixed the same as last year, and the clerk was appointed to issue the licenses. The Town Board office will be closed from Friday, December 23, until January 5, the discount date being extended to January 20. The chairman pointed out the Havelock North cemeterv was not self-supporting as they were in debt for over £37. Last year they were overdrawn to the extent of £2O. and the year before £lO. The position was not very satisfactory, but they had sufficient reserve' funds to carry on. their money being well invested, and therefore there was nothing to worry about. There were quite a lot of things that wanted attention, in the wav of new fences and paths, but the board was unable to do these. It was pointed out that the County Council only paid » subsidy of £25 towards the cemeteiv upkeep, but this was the maximum the law allowed them to pay. The cemetery was not in the Town Board district, but was under their control. The following accounts were passed for payment; General accounts £496 5/3 cemetery accounts £lB 10/-
FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION
The Havelock North Fire Bngido held a demonstration in the Domain to-day. After speeches by Sir .leo.ge Hunter. M.P.. Mr Gilbert McKay, Dr. Reeve and others, Mrs TurnerWilliams declared the brigade’s new fire engine ready for the use of the brigade, amidst applause The engine was bought and fitted up to carry hose and other firefighting appliances, and is a most creditable iob. looking very businesslike in its new coat of red Manned hy brigade members in their brass helmets, the motor made a circuit of the ground and the me n then commenced to carry out, in conjunction with representatives from the Hastings, Napier, Tomoana, and Napier Railway brigades various competitions.
Fire started in the Domain was attacked and put out by means of a chemical apparatus in quick time.
There was a large crowd present interested in the work of the firefighters. Afternoon tea. ice-cream and lollies stalls did a goo-1 trade, and the funds of the local brigade should benefit from the demonstration.
A dinner will be given the visitors this evening.
