GOVERNORS’ MEETING
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT.
The Hastings High School Board of Governors met last evening Mr E. J. W. Hallett being in. the ehatr. Mrs Armstrong. Messrs E. V. Simpson,. W J. Rush. A. I). Ross. G. McKav. the principal (Mr W. A. (}. Penhngton), and the secretary (Mr E. A. Murley) were also present. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs H. Holderness. G. A. Maddison, and. J, Wright. The Principal reported as under: —
Attendance: The number of nupils in the roll during the month averaged 222, and the daily attendance was 202. or 91 per cent. Sickness is not now so prevalent as it has been during the past few months. Staff: Mr Penlington returned to duty on the 7th November. Miss McMullan and Miss McDonald were given leave of absence to enable them to sit for examinations. Public examinations: Public examinations are now in full swing having commenced on the 15th November. Matriculation will finish on the 13th December. The examinations for Public Service Entrance. Intermediate Certificate, and Junior Scholarship (boys) were held in the school building. The number of candidates for the various examinations this year are as follows: —Public Service Entrance 22, Intermediate 8. Senior National Scholarship 10 Junior National Scholarship 17, Junior Free Place 3, Standard VI Proficiency 1, Agricultural Scholarship 1. Public Service (shorthand-typist) 1. Matriculation 16. Engineering Preliminary 2. Accountant’s Preliminary 1. Medical Preliminary 1. Accountancy Intermediate 1. Miscellaneous: A school party of pupils was aranged to attend the recent performance of “Twelfth Night” in Hastings. The party comprised 75 girls and boys. I’he formation of a flower border and the erection of a stone and concrete edging on the south side of the school has been completed by some of the boys. Lieutenant-Colonel Holderness, accompanied by Lieutenant George, inspected the Cadet Company on the 30th November, and judged the final stage of the mterplatoon competition for the BrookTaylor Cup. GENERAL. It was decided to ask Mr H. Al. Campbell. M.P., to act as speaker at the annual prize-giving ceremony on loth inst., and to ask Mrs Campbell to present the prizes. It was also decided ,to provide afternoon lea for those present. The consideration of holding a bazaar in aid of the school funds was defered until the next meeting of the Board in February. It was decided to purchase a motor lawn mower for the use of the school.
