CRAFTY BANDITS
REFUSE TO RELEASE CAPTAIN ADDITIONAL RANSOMS DEMANDED. SEARCH IN PROGRESS. [British Official Wireless.] (Received 10, 11.30 a.m.) Rugby, Dec. 9. Captain Lalor, master of the China Navigation Company’s Yangstze steamer Siangtan, who was captured a week ago by Chinese pirates and held to ransom, has not yet been released. The pirates had undertaken to produce him last Wednesday following negotiations conducted by Mr. Tocher, a Scottish missionary. It is reported that the pirates have taken the captain further into the interior and that it is not known where he is. The Admiralty states that a search is in progress. PREMATURE REPORTS. (Received 10. 12.25 p.m.) Shanghai, Dec. 9. Reports of Captain Lalor’s release were premature. According to belated messages from Ichang Mr. Tocher, the missionary mediator, is continuing to negotiate with the bandits, who are constantly shifting, fearing a rescue expedition. Apparently the ransom of 60,000 dollars demanded was forthcoming so readily that it caused the bandits to delay delivery of Lalor and demand additional ransom.
