WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

maraetotara and WAI- - INSTRUCTIVE DEMONSTRATION. A meeting of the above was held on Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs Riggir. A wet day prevented many from attending, Mrs Riggir presided, and after the customary business had been disposed Of Mr s Turner-Williams gave an interesting and most instructive demonstration of the covering of settees and easy chairs. The different processes of padding, cutting, fitting and piping were explained in a most explicit manner and consequently the task of changing shabby chairs etc. into charming and tasteful articles ot furniture has for those present lost its most formidable aspect. Mrs Turner-Williams was heartily thanked for her address. A cup Of tea provided by Mrs Thom and Miss Chambers, was acceptable to all.

Owing to the time taken up By the demonstration the rest of the programme ha<| to Ire omitted. The January meeting takes the foam of a picnic at the Waimarama beach.

Prior to the departure of the coastal steamer Progress from Dunedin on Monday a comparison of the brewery and the shipping company’s tallies disclosed the fact that a barrel of beer was missing from a shipment of some 90 or 100 barrels which was being loaded for discharge at northern ports (states the Otago ‘‘Daily Times.”) Inquiries proved fruitless, but after a prolonged search the missing barrel, then only half-full, was recovered. As to its exact where* abouts when discovered a discreet reticence has been preserved, but from a certain amount of hilarity amongst the members of the crew of an over l seas liner then lying at the wharf, it would appear that they celebrated the Christmas season somewhat prematurely, at the expense (so it is hinted) of the shipping agents.
