ANOTHER FAILURE

(Received S-L 9.5 a.m.) San Francisco, Dec. 8, Captain Kingsford Smith and Lieutenant Pond took off from Mills Field at 7.56 a.m. on a third attempt to break the world’s endurance flight record. A message froip the Spirit of California was received at 11 a.m. which stated that the attempt would be abandoned. The airmen reported they were turning back because of a broken oil-liner after being in the air a little move than three hours. They landed at Mills Field at 11.20 a.m.—(A. and N.Z.) WILL TRY AGAIN. (Received 9, 1.40 p.m.) San Francisco, Dec. 8. The aviators announced they would make another attempt to-morrow if the mechanics effect repairs In time. —(A. and N.Z.) NEW BRISTOL BIPLANE. DESIGNED TO CLIMB TO UNATTAINED HEIGHTS. (Received 9, 8.30 a.m.) London, Dec. 8. A new Bristol biplane, specially designed to climb to unattaine'd heights, is awaiting favourable weather at Farnborough aerodrome. The Air Ministry is anxious to test a theory that there is a constantly moving wind ten to twelve miles up, at a rate of 200 miles an hour. Such conditions might have a revolutionary influence on long distance flying. The engine is specially equipped for maintaining power in ratified air. The pilots will use air suits and helmets similar to divers’ and will be enclosed m a glass-windowed cabin automatically supplied with oxygen.— (A. and N.Z.)
