EXTENSION OF LEASES
QPEENSLAND URGED TO ADOPT RECOMMENDATIONS.
MAINTENANCE OF EXPORTS.
(Received 9, 9.25 a.m.) London, Dec. 8. At a meeting of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Mr. Shepherd, presiding, said a great disappointment would be felt if the Queensland Advisory Board’s conservative recommendations regard the extension of leases were hot adopted by the Government and passed into law. Queensland, he said, han borrowed liberally and it was greatly’ important that her exports should be maintained and. if possible, increased. Closer settlement, which he understood to be the Government's reason for omitting a recommendation for the extension of leases, was an important movement but it must diminish the quantity of wool grown and reduce the State's export of wool without producing other export commodities to make up the decrease. It was sincerely to be hoped that better counsels would prevail and that legislation would ultimately provide for the extension of leases, nt least to the moderate extent recommended.—(A. and N.Z.)
