FALSE PRETENCES CHARGES.
OXFORD CROSSWORD PUZZLE A FRAUD.
(Per Press Association). Auckland. December 9 A fine of £lOO or two months in gaol was imposed by Mr R. W. McKeen. S.M.. on T. W. A Gwayler. alias Paulton, aged 38. for establishing a lottery known as “The Oxford Crossword Competition,” to be followed by one month’s imprisonment On one of 36 charges of obtaining money by false pretences. The accused pleaded guilty to all chargee. Chief Detective Cmmings stated that the accused was discharged from prison on July 29 last, and the next day advertised the Oxford crossword puzzle. On September 10 he published names stated to be those of winners of the first prize of £BO. second prize £4O. and various other prizes. Enquiries bv the police failed to locate any of the persons whose names were published as prize winners, and the whole thing was a fraud. The accused had a number V”*f previous convictions before this for breaking, entering, and theft, was now serving a month’s senence and awaiting trial at the Supreme Court on another charge. Hie Magistrate said that this seemed to be an easy way to get money by fraud. The prospects of any entrants winning anything were practically nit
