MAORIS EXCLUDED
FROM HAIRDRESSING SALOON. AKARANA ASSOCIATION ’8 PROTEST. (Per Press Association). Auckland, Dec. Tho Akarana Maori Association discussed correspondence with the proprietor of a city hairdressing saloon with regard to v the exclusion of Maori customers, in respect of which the secretary of the association had written pointing out tht some of its members held very responsible po tions. Sonic were personal friends of the Prime Minister, others had conversed with the Governor-General; and others had dined with the Archbishop. The proprietor of the saloon wrote in reply that he had always excluded all coloured gentlemen from his al* oon and would continue on similar lines. The secretary was instructed to reply regretting that the proprietor did not appreciate the fine effort of the Maori to equalise his social status with that of the European. It was also decided to state that the association considered that equality of whiteness was not an essential to a gentleman.
