MR. F. N. THOMPSON

APPOINTMENT IN WELLINGTON. ASSISTANT CITY ENGINEER. (Per Press Association). Wellington, December 2. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Troup) announced last evening that the council had appointed Mr F. N. Thompson, district engineer for the Public Works Department in Hawke’s Bay assistant city engineer. Mr Thompson, who is 37 years of age, is a native of New Zealand, having been born at Waiau, North’ Canterbury. He was educated at the State School and High School at Palmerston North. In due course he matriculated, and later became an autorised surveyor and associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. besides becoming a member of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers. For the past years (except for the three and a half years’ war service as an officer of the New Zealand Engineer Tunnelling Company). Mr Thompson has been in the service of the Public Wdrks Department (states the '‘Dominion). His experience had embraced railways location and construction, tunnels, bridges, viaducts and the handling of modern excavation machinery, the construction of liydro-electric works, building construction, marine engineering. river protection, road and highway location and construction. For the past sovcm years Mr Thompson has been In charge of the Napier Public Works District, where ho was at present controlling expenditure amounting to nver half a million of money per annum, including extensive viaducts, heavy earthworks, and the Waikaromoana hydro-electriv works. He has always been particularly interested in highway work, and had considerable experience in the construction of concrete, bituminous concrete, penetration and seal pavements. He was chairman of the No. 5 District Highways Couhcil, and in that capacity had had a good insight intn tho local body aspect of the highway question.
