Mrs A. H. Pope left Hastings by mail train this morning for a few weeks ’ holiday in Wellington. Mr Otway Wellwood, who has been <Jn a visit to .Hastings, left this morning on his return to Christchurch. Sir Robert Arundel Hudson nas died, aged 63. In 1923 he married the widow of the late Viscount Northcliffe. A London cable states that Major the Hon John Jacob Astor has been elected chairman ot the Empire Pres* Union Council, in succession to Mr. J. L. Garvin, resigned. Misses Joll Cooper. Turner-Wil-liams and Dulgliesh left Hastings this morning to undergoe a course of instruction in the duties and responsibilities of officers in the Girl Guido organisation, to be held at a camp in Palmerston North, under the command of Miss Laing. Misses Hunter (3), Nelson and Laing left for Pal merston North during the week. The Rev. D. Calder, honorary secretary for the British and Fore'gn Bible Society in New Zealand will visit England and the Holy land next, year. The special reason for his visit is that he may attend a confer ence of missionary societies to be held in Jerusalem. While in England ba will make the acquaintance of leaders of the society there. “It is with deep regret we have to record the death of the late A. L. Falls who. for many years, acted as official starter for the Centre and act ed in the -position of championship starter at the Dominion championship meeting held st Napier iti 1926.’’ states the annual report of the Haw ke's Bay Amateur Swimming Centre. . Newbound (Dunedin), P. Duncan (Christchurch), a. Gavey (Wellington). The death occurred at the Waipukurau Hospital on Wednesday afternoon of Mrs Dorothy Annette Bargeant, wife of Mr W. Sargeant, of Takapau. Tho deceased lady was only 27 years of agr, and had been in the hospital for about three months. She was the daughter of Mrs A. G. Cranny and the late Mr Patrick Cranny of Napier. 11. e late Mrs Sargeant leaves a husband and four young children to mourn a great loss. Tho deceased lady was very much respected and loved by all who knew her, and tho sympathy of the public is extended to Mr Sargeant in his sad bereavement
