MATTERS RELATING TO HASTINGS REGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. PARS INTERESTING TO RATEPAYERS. The regular meeting of the Hastings Borough Council was held last evening, when the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. M, Johnson) occupied the chair. Other members present were—Crs. E. V. Simpson, A. I. Rainbow. G. C. Lowo, S. J. McKee R. Henderson and 11. Baker. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. J. Simmons. Official Advice was received that Mr J. R. Dunnott had been Special appointed., special inspecInspector tor for the purposes of the Noxious Weeds Act 190 S —Received. The Hastings High School Board wrote applying for the installation of a street lamp in Application front of the enFor Street Lamp trance gates to the school. —Referred to the electrical committee. A letter was received from Mr C. Vogtherr stating that his premises at Stortford Lodge Letter of Thanks, were now connected with the Power Board supply. Ho expressed his appreciation of the fine service the council had rendered to him at all times and thanked the council for same. —Received CORNWALL PARK MATTERS. The Director of Meteorological Servii- , Wellington, forwarded a book of instructions for Book ot the use of the Honorary Instructions Observer and intimate'! that some of the appaia tus would be forwarded shortly. Ho expected to be in Hastings early this month.—The meeting was advi.ied that the booklet had been passed on to Mr Watson who would be the observer.

Advice was received to the effect that the H.B. Fruitgrowers’ Association was prepared to contribute a proportion of the Meteorological cost of fencing the Station / area for the station. The association suggested that when the full amount was ascertained a conferencee should be called of representatives of the association. lhe Farmers’ Union, and the H.B. County Council and the Borough Council, to go fully into the matter. —The question was held over. The Hawke’s Bay County Council wrote advising that the matter of making a contribuCost of Fencing tion towards the cost of .fencing the area, had been referred to Messrs T. E. Crosse and T. M. Chambers.— Received. Advice was received from Mr Langridge that no monkeys arrived by the last boat. He had, No Monkeys. however, secured two tortoises and thtsc had been rent forward. He further offered the council two Thar (Ilimalyan goats) males. —The offer was accepted. PETROL TAX. A copy of a resolution protesting to the Government against the proposed petrol tax of Considered Excessive. qq per gallon, as it was considered excessive was received from the Wanganui Borough Council.—Received. GROUNDS FOR SPORTS An extension of the playing area at Beatson’s Park was Extension asked for by the ParkAsked For. vale Golf Club.—Referred to the Reserves Committee, A request that the council reconsider its decision regarding the increase in rent, wns No Alteration, forwarded by the Hastings Cricket Sub-Association. —It was decided to inform the association that the council could not see its way to make any alteration. Relative to Ehbett Park, the West End Tennis Club and the Hawke’s Bay Basketball AssociEbbett Park ation forwarded names Area of 21 persons who would be prepared to guarantee the sum of £3 each for the unpaid balance after the expiry of three years, of the cost of preparing and laying down tennis and basketball courts—lt was decided to accept the guarantee as forwarded As a result of a request the Napier Borough Council forwarded information and rules regarding Information the Municipal Tennis and Rules Courts at Napier.—The matter was held over until next year.

THIRD PARTY’ INSURANCE.

A copy of a letter sent to M.’sP asking that representations should be made that the State InScheme snrance Office should favoured, undertake Third-Party Risks in connection with motor vehicles, was received from Mr H. H. Thompson. Wellington. Ifwas considered that a premium of £2 a year would suffice if the whole of the business was done by the one office. It was decided to write to the member for the district advising him that the council favoured a scheme of the character outlined./
