SORROWS OF SOVIETISM
TROTSKY FACES POVERTY. (Received 24, 8.40 a.m.) London Nov. 23. The “Daily Mail’s” Riga correspondent says that Trotsky is reported to be facing poverty' and his wife has lost her position as chairwoman of the Scientific Department, over which she has presided for several years.—(Sydney “Sun” cable). LAMENTING INVESTORS. (Received 24, 9.25 a.m.) London, Nov. 23. Mr. A. M. Samuel. Financial Secretary to the Treasury, told an inquirer that it was out of the questioi for the Government to make advances of 20 per cent, of the face value of British business peoples' investments in Russian securities which the Soviet had repudiated as the loans would be repayable when the Russians recognised their liabilities. Mr. G. Buchanan (Labour, Gorbals) : Are these investors receiving parish relief? There was no answer.—(A.P.A. and “Sun” cable).
Hugh John McLeod was convicted and ordered to pay costs to-dav at Christchurch on a charge of commencing a scheme whereby prizes were disposed of by a mode of chance. A second charge of selling liquor without a license was dismissed. TJie Magistrate said this was certainly not sly grog selling. The defendant ran a scheme to help a school improvement fund, and the prizes included bottles of whisky and bottles of beer.—Press Association.
