DAMAGED CARGO
PORT CAROLINE’S DISCHARGE. CONSIDERABLE LOSS INVOLVED. (Received 24, 12.20 p.m.) London, Nov. 23. The Port Caroline’s damaged meat was loaded,at Wanganui and Tiniaru. A survey of the butter and cheese is not yet completed, but it is known that 14,000 crates of blitter and 800 crates of cheese were seriously damaged by water. The' butter is tainted and has a stale meat flavour. It will be necessary to scrape off the outside before it is saleable. All the cargo will have to be submitted to the sanitary authorities before sale is permitted. Samples have been sent to the Cambridge Research Station to determine .the fitness for selling. Eighty per cent, of the damaged butter came' from Auckland. Eight thousand carcases of mutton were condemned. The damage was apparently due to a small port inside the ship starting a leak during a storm when rounding Cape Horn.—(A. and N.Z.)
