G. BAYNE’S FINE RACE.

Wellington, Nov. 20.

The outstanding performance at an electric light meeting under the auspices of tue Wellington Centre, held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night, were those of G. Bayne, who beat R. A. Rose by a couple of yards in the mile in 4 minutes 33 seconds, and F. S. Ramson, who defeated the champion, R. W. Lander, in both the 120 and 440 yards hurdle races. Only scratch events were included on the programme, and the form displayed was of a high standard. The track wa 5 inclined to be heavy after the recent rain. There was an attendance of between 2000 and 3000 spectators.

NEW ZEALAND’S FINE SHOWING

Melbourne, Nov. 20.

The final stage of the cycling grand prix. Warnambool to Melbourne. 165 miles, resulted:—H. Opperman (Victoria), first, Bhrs. 14mins. 59secs.; H. Watson (New Zealand), second, 8-40-57; E. Bainbridge (Victoria), third, 8-41-30; L. Einsidel (Victoria), fourth, 8-57-37; W. Rennie (New Zealand), fifth, 8-59-39. New Zealand won the teams race and Rennie won the sealed handicap prize from Oolac to Melbourne 100 miles. Amateur K. Foster, first. 4-47-3; E. Lamb, second; C. A. Maggs, third. Lukey (New Zealand) was sixteenth.

Thirty-one riders started in the final stage. Opperman left Warnambool 45 minutes before Watson and the others followed according to the aggregate times taken for the previous sections. Opperman’s total riding time for the 6904 mites was 40-41-34, a world’s record. Watson finished well, taking second prize. £lOO. He stated after the race that it was the hardest thine h e had done in his life, but well worth the trip. He averaged a fall and a puncture each day. Watson and Rennie won the teams race easily taking £6O. Opnerman’s total prize money was over £4OO and a cup. All the riders were bronzed by the weather.
