SUBSIDIES FOR SCHOOLS
METHOD OF ALLOCATION.
PRINCIPLE CRITICISED.
“The troutlie is a wealthy school like Napier Central can raise say £lOO for improvements and get a subsidy of £1 for £l. yet in the* country where they get £5O worth of labour, but not actually cash they get nothing. The position is not at all fair. The principle of allocating these subsidies is uito wrong.” said Mr W. Cuthbertson at to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board during a discussion on the question of subsidies on contributions.
Mr Wright: The whole thing could h 0 worked all right by smart bookkeeping. There certainly should bo an easement in the regulations to allow country schools to have a subsidy on labour. After further discussion it was decided to approach the Department with a view to an alteration in the recommendations being made to enable subsidies to be given on labour.
