AUSTRALIA’S NEEDS

MEN AND MARKETS CAUSE OF UNEMPLOYMENT. NOT DUE TO OVER-POPULATION [By Cable —Preu Amu. — Copyright.) (Received 16, 11.55 a.m.) Sydney, Nov. JB. The Hon. L. M. Amery returned to Sydney. Addressing the Million* Club he reiterated his argument that what Australia wanted was men and markets. Dealing with the question of unemployment he said it was a mistake to assume that unemployment here or in the Old Country was due to over-population. It was due to defective organisation and maybe due to defective balance between the different industries, but it was not due to over-population. Immigration was the only effective cure for unemployment, so long as the right class of immigrant was obtained and became productive units. Both England and Australia needed an outside market. When they look' ed at the outside markets of the world and the tariffs that were raised against England and Australia ami at the competition of lower-paid labour it was well that they should consider whether they should combine some advantages of a wide outside market with security of the home market by making the Empire the wider home market for them all. If they worked separately and “anyhow” their producing power was lost and their trade went to countries that had no intention of buying from them if they could help it. They had to harness and co-ordinate their power.

"If we can get together we can make use of the enormous natural resources of the British Empire with results that will surprise us and stagger the world.”
