""Unity is Strength " does not seem to have, been the motto adopted by the Auckland fire brigades during the progiess of the recent tire, as will be seen from the following extract from the Southern Cross :—". . . . About this time a most unseemly squabble arose between Mr Matthews and Mr Asher, the superintendents of the rival tire brigades. Orders were given by one and countermanded by the other, the crowd cheering and jeering at the bandying of words that ensued. His Worship the Mayor and the police endeavored to reconcile the contending brigades, and succeeded to some extent; but the hostility broke out anew at every change of position. It is quite evident that this divided authority will not do, and steps must be taken to determine who is to have control oi the city engines, and to place the brigades on a proper footing The men appeared up to their work, but were interrupted by the disagreements of their officers. Human remains have been found near the Wakapuaka Road, Nelson. A razor wrapped in paper was also found in a pocket of the coat. The indications point to suicide as being the cause of deaili. The Colonist, commenting on tie, subject, says :—"Rumor points to a domestic- circumstance which occurred about seven weeks ago in this town, wherein a person, about to be married to the daughter oi a town resident, suddenly disappeared on what should have been the wedding day, and who was supposed to have left suddenly for the West Coast. It is said that the articles of jewellery found on the corpse can be sworn to, especially a puzzle ring attached to the watch chain, and the walking-stick." The Colonists' Protection League, an Auckland association, has recently had a. pamphlet printed, entitled "A Bone to X'ick for Free Tiade/' and at a late meeting it whs decided to forward copies of the pamphlet to the Press in the Colony in favor of protection. Why not send the pamphlet also to that portion of the Press, devoted to free trado interests \
