]na local paragraph in our last relating to. an unclaimed letter in the Spanish language, now lying at the Napier Post Office, we omitted to mention thai it bears the Gibraltar postmark. A Provincial Government Gazette, issued to day, contains notices of the days appointed for the .sittings of the Supreme Court in Napier, us follows: -—For civil and criminal business, on Monday, Dec, .9, at 10 a.m.; in bankruptcy, on Friday, December 13, at }l a.m.; and in banco on. Monday, Pee. 16, at 11 a.m. Readers of shipping notes will have observed from time to time that unusually large shipments of »Vool are being made coastwise from Port Ahuiiri this season. We shall endeavour in due time to. publish a correct statement of the quantity thus exported, and the sinpyQX-iniate value of the same.
We learn that the members of two friendly societies in this town —the Foresters and the Oddfellows—have agreed to unite in giving a picnic in Napier on New Year's Day—to take place in Sturm's pa J dock. As a significant fact, we may mention that, without, exception, every member of the General Assembly, being an opponent of the present Ministry, who has addressed his constituents since the close of the session, has received a favorable verdict at the hands of the electors. Consumers of coal will read with satisfaction an announcement which appears in our advertising columns, to the effect that that very necessary article of fuel may now be obtained from Mr. J. H. Van tier at the rate of 45s per ton, for cash on delivery. As announced, a meeting of the Napier Rifle Volunteers was held in the Band-room, Hastings street, last evening, for the purpose of electing an Ensign. The attendance, however, owing to some misunderstanding regarding the date on which the meeting was to take place, was so small, that itwas deemed advisable to adjourn, which was accordingly done—the next meeting to take place on Wednesday evening ing next, 4rh prox. Here is an item for our VoJnuteers. The Southern Cross, 20th November, say*:—-"The Thames Scottish Volunteers are prepared to fire a rifle match against any other Volunteer Company in the North Island. Twenty men a side. Stakes to Ue a matter of after arrangement. Ranges, 200 yards to 800 yaids. Match to be tired within two months from this date, and competitors in each team to have been members of their respective companies for at least two mouths previous to 18ih November, 1872."
