. + . + Melbourne, 24th Oct. The Education Bill has passed through committee. Cable communication was restored between Port Darwin and Java on the morning of the 21st Oct. Mr Francis telegraphed to Mr M'Culloch in Scotland, offering him the Agent-General-ship. A was received accepting the offer.

Adam Barnes, late manager of the Colonial Bank at Melbourne, has been appointed manager of the National Bank of New Zealand. Salary, £3,000 per annum.
