WELLINGTON.
Tuesday, Sept. 26—evening. Six petitions were presented to-day from the Roman Catholics on the Education Bill. Tte Committee to enquire into the management of the Telegraph Department, announced to the House that they desired to examine Captain Peaice, of the steamer Gothenburg, and obtained leave to sit during Ihe sitting of the House. The Minister of Public Works' statement is postponed until to-morrow. Mr Stafford announced the formation of an oiganised opposition. Mr Macandrew moved a resolution in Committee of Supply, that the committee be instructed to reduce .all salaries 25 per cent, above .£4OO, and arrange for amalgamation of offices, with a view to lessen the number ot civil servants. The debate on the motion has not yet concluded. The Government oppose the discussion. The Wellington Synod met to-day, when Bishop Uadfield delivered the opening address. Wednesday, Sept 27. The House pat till half past three o'clock this morning. The Government desired to see the first item of the estimates passed, and then to obtain assent of House to their policy. Members opposed this course. They wanted to hear the Minister of Public Works' statement first. Each side tried to tire the other out. The Government gave in at 3 o'clock. Committee reported progress without any vote being passed.
