Correspondence.

[We do not in any way identify ourselves with the opinions of correspondents,]

to the editor of the hawke's bat times. Sir, —I regret to observe that your contemporary the Daily Telegraph, under its present management, is fast assuming a character which must exclude it from respectable households. In saying this I do not so much refer to its unprovoked and persistent attacks on a society which has for its professed object the prevention of drunkeness, as to the tone of flippancy, to say the least of it, with regard to certain social subjects of a very delicate nature, which is beginning to pervade its articles both original and extracted. If any of your leaders are in doubt as to my meaning, they will understand it by referring for instance to an article called "The man of the period," which appeared in its columns a few days ago, The English press has always borne the character of being the purest in the world, and the fact of inserting any expression that would call a blush to the cheek of innocence would, in general, be sufficient to damn the reputation, and with it the circulation of any journal in England. The New Zealand press also has been singularly irreproachable in this respect, and you, Sir, will do a good service to the public by discountenancing, by every method in your power, an innovation in Hawke's Bay journalism which is very far indeed from being an improvement. I am, &c, Censor.
