The Nelson Provincial Government have decided to abandon entirely the collection of wharfage dues in Westport, and the lease of the upper wharf will be submitted to auction on about the 31st inst.
The Cambridge (Waikato) correspondent of the New Zealand Herald writes as follows under date November 4:—"There is a rumor going the rounds of this district that the Hon. D. M'Lean wishes to returu to the natives a numbar of reserves within the confiscated line. If this rumor turns out to be well founded there will be a great amount of indignation felc here against the Native Minister. A general expressed opinion here is that these lands ought rather to be handed over as school reserves. Surely the Government are not about to revert to something like the sugar and flour policy of former days? At all events it would answer no good end to give back these lands l;o natives who muy make a sort of half promise of loyalty.—Referring the above, the New Zealand Herald savs:—-"A rumor seems to have gained curre cy at Cambridge that the (jrovernraent contemplate handing baek to the natives a quantity of reserves at this side of the confiscated line. We are disinclined to credit a rumor of any intended proceeding so hopelessly idiotic." A gentleman asked a lady, known to be utterly ignorant of languages, " How did you get along when abroad to make yourself understood ?" " Oh, my dear sir," replied she with quite a French air, "we had an interrupter with us." The same lady, having arranged some antique statues in an adjoining room, requested the same gentleman to " step into the next impartment and see her antics."
