DUNEDIN.
Wednesday, Nov. 16. In the Provincial Council to-day, a motion was tabled to make arrangements for the union of Otago with Southland. Mr Macassey is a candidate for the representation of Dunedin in the General Assembly.
Mr Driver addressed his constituents on Monday. He a vote of confidence.
At a sale of sugars yesterday there was a largo attendance, and the bidding spirited. The prices show an increase over last quotations.
CHRISTCHURCH.
Thursday, Nov. 17. The Executive and the Superintendent have disagreed regarding the interest claim of the Bank of New Zealand. The Executive think the whole thing should be referred to arbitration. The Superintendent contended that, advised by the previous Executive he declined to submit to arbitration, and therefore an administrative act done by him could not be re-opened. Mr Hall's statement about the action of the Executive was recei\ ed with enthusiastic cheers. The Council immediately adjourned until 5 p.m. to-day, when Mr J. S. Williams' motion comes on—io the effect that the present Executive is not bound by the administrative act done by the Superintendent with the advice of the former Executive, except in cases where the good faith of the Province has been involved—the Executive will be supported by a large majority, and a dead lock i< anticipated. The Superintendent is likely to resign. The Education Bill has been shelved on recommittal.
The Lyttelton Fire Relief Committee is now sitting. Claims have been sent in amounting to ,£IO,OOO.
