A Mr M'Q.uade has succeeded in bringing out safely in the Merope from England to Canterbury, a very handsome fox. Mr and Mrs Darrell have, we learn, been most successful at Greymouth, and are now playing with great success in Hokiiika. Mr James Fullerton, a reporter at Glasgow, has obtained £IOO damages against a Mr Walker, for having stated that a mistake made by the reporter was wilful, and for a corrupt purpose. Mr Heller, conjuror, musician, composer, &c, would appear to be highly popular in Auckland. In the latest Southern Cross we read :—On Saturday night Mr Heller was viBited at the City Hall by a large and respectable portion of our citizens. Whatever may have been their thoughts on entering the hall we cannot tell, but there can only be two impressions on leaving—wonder and amazement. He seems never to be exhausted. Whether in trick or in his witticisms be never wearies his audience and never repeats. All is fresh as the sparkling mountain stream. A man named John Cook gave himself up at the Mayor's Court, Dunedin, the other day, on the charge of having deserted from the4o.th Eegiment at Ohapa, on the 11th August, 1866*, but there being no evidence against him, he discharged. The Melbourne Telegraph is informed that by the outgoing mail Dr. L. L. Smith and Captain Fitzgerald, a retired military bfficer, have forwarded to the Imperial Government plans and drawings of a_ weapon they have invented, termed the " annihilator," which is said to be capable of firing a million bullets in flfteen seconds. Armed with such weapons our artillery corps alone, without police or volunteers, might possibly be a sufficient defenpe for the Colony, and the public will no doubt desire to know why the patent for such a murderous weapon was not eagerly seized upon the Government.
