CANTERBURY.
Saturday, Nov. 12. The Provincial Council has passed a clause in the Education Bill authorising a uniform household rat© of ,£1 per annum, and 5s for each child of a family, up to four in number, attending public schools. The system of public education in this Province is almost entirely assimilated to that of Nelson. The first dog show in the Province was held yesterday at Barnard's Repository. There was 97 entries of various breeds. The effect of the agricultural show is very encouraging. The Bazaar in aid of St. Michael's new parish church realised between £6OO and £7OO. Mr Karslake opposes Mr Cracroft Wilson for Coleridge. Colunel Brett (who was a candidate for Serwyn) retires in favor of Mr Reeves. Yesterday, the Selling Stakes was won by Lyndon, and the Consolation by Catapult Au inquiry into the cause of the fire at Lyttelton "is to be held on Monday.
AUCKLAND.
Thursday, Nov. 10. A league, entitled " The Colonial Industries League," has been formed here. Its object is to secure, if possible, the return of members to the Assembly favorable to encouraging colonial productions, either by means of the tariff or by bonuses. Mr Collie has gone to San Francisco. In a letter published in the Southern Cross he says that his partner, Mr Stewart, has been the victim of judicial corruption, and that when he took his depaitme from Tahiti he left behind him a sufficient sum of money to pay all his debts. A. man named Williams has been drowned. Heller is drawing crowded houses. Dry's marine view is exhibiting. In an appeal against a conviction for a breach of the Provincial Licensing Act, the Chief Justice held that proof of the Act must be given to validate the conviction.

Friday, Nov. 11. The elections are beginning to be thought of. Mr Richmond (late Native Minister) is up for the Grey and Bell district. Mr Carrington will oppose them. Mr Kelly is up for the town, Carthew for Eden, and Sewell and Brown are both spoken of. Mr Richmond holds a meeting at Tikoana tonight, and Mr Kelly will address the electors of the town tomorrow. The Provincial Council wants the Superintendent to sit in the Council, b'rt that gentleman declines the honor. The boatmen here have been fined for going alongside of steamers before anchoring. Eight members of the Rifle Associa tion challenged ten men of the Armed Constabulary to a match, which was won by the latter, having scored thirtysix points metre than their opponents. The firing was very good. Rain, which was much wanted, has fallen during the past iwo days.

Monday, Nov. 7. Leery, the Crooked" River murderer, will be hanged on Monday next. Elton's case has been further adjourned.
The floods at Echuca have been higher than ever before known, threeparts of the town being several feet under water. The inhabitants were driven from their houses, and over two hundred tents are pitched. The Government sent boats to save life anc| property. The water is now receding. The Assembly have adopted the address in reply to the opening speech,. Several bills have been introduced. The Spring race* commenced on Saturday. The three last races were ran, in torrents of ram. Tait declared to win with Phyrrus, but Florence got away from his rider and won, hard held. Phyrrus was second ; third, doubtful. An horse exposition commenced today. The weather is beautifully fine. The Directors of the National Bank resigned at the half-yearly meeting. Applications for the Professorship of Natural Science for the Otago University, have been advertised for in the Victorian papers. Breadstuff's firm. Flour, £l2 10s to £l2 15s. Wheat, 5s 6d to 5s 9d. Oats, dull at from 3s 5d to 3s Bd. Satisfactory prices were realized at the opening wool sales. The Zephyr has sailed for Hokitika.

Sunday, Nov. 6, The Government have decided to engage the unemployed to construct military works at Botany Bay; they have also authorised the formation of two additional Volunteer Batteries of Artillery. Public meetings have been held, at which the new Tariff has been Renounced, The Government have introcjuced a new schedule of measurement duties. Treasurer Slialing will not accept defeat on the Budget as a ministerial defeat. Wool sales heavy. Parkes has been elected for Kiama. The mail steamer takes a number of French officers from Noumea, New Caledonia, for Europe. Sales of sugars by auction realized good prices. The Germans have sent <£6oo tp the Berlin Patriotic Fund. The ship "William Duthie reports seeing the ship Malabar on. five, off Greenock, oil the 23r4 Sept. No men or boats were visible. Breadstuff's quiet.

Sunday, Nov. 6. The Savings Bank have taken up Northern Territory Bonds—ten thousand at £7 12s 6d premium; and tea thousand at £8 Is preminum. Great damage has been occasioned from floods in the North* The Land Bill has passed the third reading. BreadstufFs quiet. "Wheat quoted at 5s Bd. Flour, £l3 to £l4. The Surveyor of the Port Darwin Telegraph line has reached latitude and reports very favorably of the country.
