OHINEMURI.—FURTHER TROUBLES.
A cobkespondent, writing to the Thames Advertiser, says : —" A half-caste has arrived from Whangamata to consult with Te Hira, ahout sending the Ngatekaraos assistance, as Matieu':* party had commenced by destroying all the Ngatekaraos' seed potatoes, fences, &c, on an island called Hauturu, on the southernmost entrance of the harbor. It is expected that something serious will take place. Matieu has a very few people with him, and should Te Hira assist the other party, which I have no doubt he will, I am afraid Mattieu will have a bad chance. Te Hira has a settlement a few miles distant (Mataura), being a mixed-up lot composed of Ngatiporous, &e.—all Hauhaus and king natives—and one word from Te Hira for them will be sufficient to open the ball. Matieu is quite determined to have it decided by the Court, but of course will hold possession of it if he can, until it is decided. I also heard also that he intends to go to the Thames shortly to consult with the authorities, as he has -shaken -off all connection with the Hauhau party. There are a few Europeans digging gum at Hikutaia. No more will be permitted at present until further orders. They are digging on the king's boundary, which will be a better pile for Te Hira and his party."
