The English Mail was expected at Melbourne on the 17th inst. To-morrow, at noon, Stuart and Co. will hold an auction sale of oats, potatoes, and cheese. We have to thank Mr Mos~, pur ser of t>he s.s. Wellington, for late files of Southern papers. We have heard that a body of Armed Constabulary may be shortly expected to arrive from Wellington to garrison Gore Browne Barracks. Williams, one of the prisoners who recently escaped from iSapier Jail, has, we believe, been heard of at Wainui, where he had stolen a horse, the property of Mr Herbert. ;It; is now believed that he is making for Taranaki. We have been shown the copy of a letter from the chief harbor-master at Lyttelton to Mr li. Kraeft, pilot at this port, soliciting his co-opera-tion in procuring subscription towards defraying the expenses of purchasing and placing a stained glass window in Timaru Church to the memory of the late lamented Mr J. M. Balfour, Colonial Marine Engineer. The object is a laudable one, and we have little doubt that the public of this Province, by whom Mr Balfour was held in high esteem, will come forward with their usual liberality. We have been informe i that subscription lists lie at both the Banks, and donations will be thankfullv received by Mr Kraeft,
THE MISSING SEIP MATOAKA. Tite anxiety which has existed as to the fate of the ship Matoaka, in consequence of ambiguous telegrams, is now happily at an end. In the Evening Star, it is recorded that "a telegram has received in the City, stating that the long missing ship Matoaka, from Canterbury to London, has turned up, having arrived at home dismasted."
