WELLINGTON. October 2, 2.30 p.m. Wi Tamararq, one of the prisoners which were condemned to be hanged for the East Coast murders, strangled himself in gaol on Wednesday last. Eight more of the prisoners kept on board the hulk in the harbor were tried on Thursday on a charge of high treason. They were found guilty, but their sentences were deferred.
The remainder of the prisoners are to be tried on Tuesday. The raising of the s.s. Taranaki haa been successfully accomplished, and the wreck "-was towed into the harbor yesterday dfternoon by the s.s. Lady Bird. As a whole, she is found to be in tolerable condition; her engines are uninjured. An auction sale of her cargo, which is only partially damaged, is to be held on Monday.
