TARANAKI.
(Taranaki Herald, Aug. 11.) DISBANDMENT OF THE TAEANAKI BUSH COBPS. Amongst the reductions made by the new Government, have been the disbanding of the local forces in this Province. Orders arrived by the Ahuriri to reduce our forces from 550 men — which we have lately had on pay—to 300. Accordingly the natives have all been struck off pay; also the Bush Party which was commanded Ly Capt. McKellar, lately stationed at Tiko rangi. The Bush Corps were marched into town yesterday, and were told that if any of the men intended to leave the Province, they were to deliver up their arms at the Militia Office. The men asked when they were to be paid, but as the Captain could not inform them, they said they would give up their arms on receiving what was due to them. After giving three cheers for Captain McKellar and Lieut. Carrick, the men dispersed.
AN OBDEBLY DBOWtfED IN THE MIMI BIVEB. Intelligence reached town on Monday night that a mounted orderly had been drowned that morning, while attempting to swim the Mimi River. From inquiries made yesterday, we ascertained that James Curran, the orderly, left Waiiti, at 8 a.m. on Monday, and should have been at Urenui about 10. Mr W. Carrington, jun., came by the same road a short time after the orderly, and upon reaching Urenui was surprised to find that Curran had not arrived. Two orderlies were immediately sent to Waiiti from Urenui, to report the circumstance. The bush was then scoured on both sides of the Mimi, but there were no traces of the missing man, although his horse was seen to come from the interior, near from Mr Messenger's house. The body of the unfortunate man was subsequently fouud uear the fording-place, below highwater mark, with his spine broken.
