WANGANUI.

The following are extracts from papers received this morning : The Times says that at about 5 o'clock on the morning of the 17th inst., a fire broke out in a small outhouse, used for curing purposes, at the rear of Mr Locket's, butcher, Victoria Avenue. The fire was happily prevented by the exertions of the Fire Brigade, and others, from spreading farther. We noticed, the Comet was the only engine present, and it did its work well.

The following i 3 from the Wanganui Times: —By latest advices, our old friend (!) Titokowaru has returned to Ngatinaru, on the banks of the Waitotara river, with 60 of his own followers. Shortly after his arrival there, he was joined by 60 of the Wanganui up-river Hauhaus, and that appears to be now the strength of his force. He is waiting (like Mr Micawber), without any definite object, to " see what may turn up." Some of the Waitotara rebels, who surrendered to the up river Wanganui natives a fortnight ago, have found their way to Wanganui, and walk about the streets as " British subjects." Here they may confront some of the settlers whose houses they burned down, whose properties they destroyed, and whose blood they thirsted for. We trust it is not necessary to do more than direct the attention of the Government to this subject. The Chronicle says the telegraph wires are now on the poles as far as the Kangitikei, and the whole forms quite a new feature along our roadsides. Such poles have been a source of great gratification to the buffaloes on the prairies of -A merica, as rubbiug posts. We saw them devoted the other day to a similar purpose in New Zealand. This is certainly getting all possible use out of them !
