AUCKLAND STOCK MARKET

The following is Messrs Carey and Grilles report for the week ending Friday, 20th August:— Although the markets were not overstocked with beef this week, yet in consequence of the large purchases made by the the trade during the last two weeks, a number of which were still on hand, the competition was not so brisk as might otherwise have been expected. A number of prime cattle were withdrawn, owners having an inclination to hold for a highei* figure than offered. We may quote first-class beef at 40s to 425; second-class and inferior, 34s to 375. There is no improvement in the value of full-grown store cattle, owing to the scarcity of grass. Young stuck are in demand, especially heifers, selling readily at good figures. Fat sheep maintained fully last week's quotations, realizing 4d to 5d per lb. At the Junction Yards, on Wednesday, wo obtained the follwing prices : Fat Cattle.—We disposed of a number of Napier cattle of first class quality at from £l2 15s to £lB 10s per head, being an average of 40s to 425; a shipment from Wanganui, from £9 to £lO 7s 6d, or 34s to 37s per 100 lbs. Those were of inferior quality. Store Cattle.—We sold some Wanganui steers at £7 Is to £8 15s ; also a mob of young heifers at £6 Is to £7 Is per head. Sheep. —We quitted as follows :--Merino wethers, ex Rangatira and Lord Ashley, from Napier, at lis to 14s j ex Storm Bird, from Wanganui, inferior quality, at 10s 6d to 15s 6d.
