AUCKLAND.
Our files by the s.s. Ahuriri are up to Wednesday last. Hi 9 Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh made his public entry into Auckland on Monday, 10th. The weather was very unfavorable, and the Duke's arrival somewhat unexpected,—notwithstanding which, however, his reception would appear to have been of the most loyal and enthusiastic description One event, however, occurred to mar the day's enjoyment, viz., a painful accident which happened to a seaman belonging to H.M.S S. Challenger, nemed G-eorge Duck. It appears that during the firing of the royal salute, when the Prince was landing, one of the Challenger's guns exploded, blowing the seaman referred to into the water. A sub-lieutenant named O'Connor immediately jumped overboard and resoued his ehipmate, who, it was found, had his right am blown away, and the who'e of the left hand ex* cept one finger. The right arm was amputated above the elbow, and at latest dates the poor fellow was doing well. This is the third time the gallant young sublieutenant has jumped to the rescue, —on two of which occasions he has been instrumental in saving life. He has been recommended to the Royal Humane Socieiy as worthy to receive the Society's gold medal, which is the reward of gallantry and humanity. A correspondent writing under date Wednesday evening, supplies us with the following : —" The weather is beautiful: the Duke is out shooting with the Governor. His stay in Auckland will extend over the Queen's birthday. It is said that he will not visit the Thames—want of time being the excuse urged."
