THE EAST COAST.
LATEST JSEWS.
SUPPOSED WHEREABOUTS
OF TE KOOTI.
On Tuesday last a gentleman arrived in Napier from Tai;po, and brings the folioving news. We must premise that it is derived from native reports, but is probably correct. Te Kooti was believed to be at Tauaroa, about 40 miles from Ranangu on the Rangitaiko River, but it does not seem that anyone had seen him there.
No immediate danger to this Province need be apprehended, as Te Kooti would most likely make for the Upper Waikato. There were no natives to be seen at Tarawera, but there were three —an old man and two women—in the Repia Valley, Paora Hapi's natives were alarmed and preparing for an attack. Although it is not improbable that Te Kooti is making his way up the Rangitaiko Valley from Whakatane, he is said to have been followed by a force of Aravvas, who had had an engagement with him. There are no valid grounds for alarm in this Province, and the Colonel commanding is on the alert in case that Te Kooti should turn his steps in this direction.
We learn on good authority that the Hon. J. C. Richmond will shortly visit the East Coast.
