Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1869. THE GENERAL GOVERNMENT AND MR. M'LEAN.
Public opinion is greatly misrepresented by our local contemporary in its assertion that the action of the General Government in depriving Mr M'Lean of his authority as its agent on the East Coast is universally condemned. With the exception of a party, composed principally pf interested persons, the whole public is justly of the opposite opinion. It is evident that in preventing Ropata and the main portion of his men from proceeding to the "West Coast—in opposition to the expressed will of the Government- —he exceeded the bounds of his commission, and could reasonably look for no othei result than that which has followed. The effect of 'exhibiting the Government of the Colony in a state of antagonism amongst its parts could pot be any other than most disastrous to the mind of the natives, p,nd rather than contribute to such
result lie should have foregone his
own views, after seeing that they were not adopted by the Government, and acted in unison with it. His "manly opposition" tended to bring the Government into concempt, and such result could only be averted by depriving him of his authority.
