George A. Oliver, Esq., has been appointed Revising Officer, for the Electoral Districts of Napier and Clive.
The' Auckland Wesleyan body have sent the widow of the late Rev. John Whiteley a letter of condolence, which will be found elsewhere. Tenders will be received at the Superintendent's office until noon on Saturday next, 27th inst., for the under mentioned services : -(1) Extension of the piling below Meanee Bridge; (2) metalling 40 chains of main road near Louisa Creek; and (3) metalling 20 chains of the Mid-dle-road at Havelock. The Secrets of the Telegraph. —Under the above heading our local contemporary has a paragraph which to us appears like a libel on the employes of the Government in the Telegraph office, The messages transmitted between any two parties by the telegraph are regarded as sacred. The nature of such messages can only be made known to third parties by a breach of confidence. Tris rule, we assume, holds; good with " the (supposed) future Government agent and the gallant officer in command on the one part> and some member of the Government on the other," as well as in all other cases. Either, then, there must have been some such breach of confidence—in which case these secrets are secrets no longer—or the Herald has been drawing upon its imagination. Education Rate.—On Tuesday, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, William Colenso, Esq., was sued by the Educational Kate Collector, in the name of his Honor the Superintendent, for the sum of £1 under the Act. Mr Colenso made a long and able defence on legal grounds, maintaining that either the rate could not be collected till the end of the year, or that the Act was re pugnant to the Constitution Act. The Bench deferred its decision till the following day, when judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs. Mr Colenso gave notice of appeal to the Supreme Court. A report of the case appears elsewhere.—We understand that a public meeting of the inhabitants will shortly be held to afford an opportunity for the expression of opinion on the Education Rate,
