MASSACRE AT CLIFTON.

Wellington, Sunday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m.
The s.s. Rangatira has just arrived; from Wanganui and Taranaki. News arrived at Taranaki on the 15th inst. that the whole of the settlers at Clifton (White Cliffs) l*ad been massacred by Mokau. The s.s. Wellington went and; brought in the scattered families to= New Plymouth. Those murdered aie eight in number—Lieutenant Gascoigne, wife, and three children; the Rev. Mr Whiteby, Wesleyan Minister; and Edward and John. Milliner, settler* An armed force was sent to White Cliffs, an.d arrived there on the 16th.. They found all the bodies buried ex«. cept Mr Whitoby's, which was lyingoutside^ The murderers are supposed to b* Phillips, (half-caste), Te Hetere, T». Koko, and another native. Those murdered were in a blockhouse, and had arms; but no defence, appears to have been made. Mr Whiteby was on horseback, and hw. horse was also shot.
