HIS HONOR'S REPLY TO. THE DEPUTA-. TION. The following is the reply of hi% Honor the Superintendent to the> deputation which waited on him with the resolutions passed at tha late public meeting : {Superintendent's office, Napier, Feb. 19., 18f>9. Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledgo the receipt of the resolutions on the subject of the Education Act, passed at a publia meeting held at the Oddfellows' Hall on 'the 15th instant. While I ve»-y much regret that it should, he necessary to collect a rate during a pe« riod of so much depression, at the samo time I would leinind the deputation that the Educational Kates Act passed th* Council almost without opposition, that no petitions were presented against i',—• and that, in accordance with a resolution of the Council, a conimis ion has been ap> pointed to prepare an Education Bill, iu order that the same may be dealt with a$ the next meeting of the Provincial Council. Uuder these circumstances I am advised that I should not be jus! ifled in delating the operation of the Educational Ratei Act; indeed it may well be doubted if 1 have the power to do so. I, however, trust that the deputation, and the ratepayer* whom they represent, will on consideration, come to the conclusion that the wisest course on the present occasion will be to <nbmit to payment of the rate, relying that the Council, at its next meeting, will <*ive due attention to any representations, that may be made by the body of ratepayers.
