The following truly sad intelligence ha* been furnished to the Wanganui papers by Colonel Whitmore * — On the afternoon of Thursday, Eeb. 18, 10 men of Lieut.-Colonel M'Donnell's division, under Sergeant Menzies, formed themselves into a foraging party, and crossed the Waitotara to pick some peaches which had been observed during the Colonel's expedition towards Tokangamutu (?) on the previous day. They had scarcely reached the Peach Grove when the Maoris came, and immediately opened fire. Our men hurried back to camp. None of them would appear to have been hit on the first fire; but whilst escaping in the canoe. Menzies' left-hand man, who had the paddle, did not know how to manage it, and the enemv were thus enabled to overtake them before they got out of reach. Constable Envoy and another man swam across the river, both of them being wounded; and were at last killed in mounting the beach. Two other men took shelter in the bush. Menzies and the rest of the men were shot down from above or tomahawked in the river.

The body ot Menzies was the only one recovered. M'Donnell turned out his men with the greatest possible despatch, and was on the ground in a very few minutes.

The enemy opened fire on him as he approached; but having found the canoe and gained possession of it, our forces crossed and drove back the enemy; bringing off the two men who had sought shelter in the bush. [fjjom another coebespondent.] On Thursday, the 18th instant, a Sergeant named Menzies, accompanied by nine men, crossed the river and went down to Para,tupu for the purpose of gathering peaches j when.
