The "West Coast.—We learn from Wellington yesterday that Cobb's Coacli had brought in nothing later from Wansranui. The statement in the Wanganui papers that Titokowaru's whereabouts had been discovered is not confirmed. Erratum.—We have to correct an awkward mistake which occurred in the paragraph about the earth quake which appeared in our last issue. Instead of iC yesterday," it .should have read, "on Thursday." Education Rate.—A public meetino- to take this tax into consideralion, held on Monday evening in accordance with advertisement, in the Odd-fellows' Hall. The meeting was largely attended; resolutions were passed almost unanimously, condemning the rate; and a deputation (consisting of Messrs Colenso, Edwards, Cotterell, and the Chairman, Mr 11. Brenton) appointed to lay them before the Superintendent, his Honor's reply to be made public in the press. The meeting bound itself to resist the act by every legitimate means; to put its legality to die test; and to assist any persons falling victims to its provisions. A ifull report will be found elsewhere
Te Kooti Threatening Opotiki. —We stop the press to announce that news has arrived by the Ahuriri, to the effect that Te Kooti and a number of his band are stated to be erecting a redoubt at Mairaiti, where they expect to be reinforced by the Uriweras, and that the women and children have been ordered out of the tovns-hip. Our authority is the Evening JSfews of the 15 th inst. The Thames Advertiser of lGfch states that one of Te Kooti's men had been taken prisoner.
.Fire in Hastings-street.—Last evening, about half-past nine o'clock, a lire broke out in Hastings-street, resulting in the total destruction of the stables occupied by Mr Charles Palmer, and which had been but recently erected. There is no clue at present to the origin of the lire; the whole of the horses were got J safely away, a quantity of hay was destroyed, but a number of bags of oats, <fec, were taken out in time.! We understand that the stables were insured, in the New Zealand Insurance Company, but for what amount we have not heard. The fire-engine was on the spot shortly after the first alar in, and the hose laid to the beach, but owing to some defect in it, and to the heavy surf, it was of little use. As our readers are aware, Mr Palmer's stables were situated in the rear of the offices of Mr C. E. Lee and Mr Cuff, and some dwelling-houses on the other side. These were, by the application of wet blankets, saved from destruction ; although at one time Mr Lee's office was in so much danger, that it was deemed advisable to remove the whole of its contents to a place of safety; in fact, the es-
cape of both'these offices is something marvellous. It is matter for thankfulness that the destruction was not more wide-spread, which, there can be no doubt, would have been the case had a high wind been blowing at the time, or had it taken place at a later hour; as it was, there was very little wind, and by 11 o'clock all danger to buildings in proximity to the smouldering mass was past. Captain Withers, paymaster to the Colonial Forces, returned from Wairoa on Saturday last, accompanied by Lieut. Preece.
