THE TAUPO ROAD.
To the Editor of the Jlawkcs Bay Times. Sir, —"Will you give space in your columns for the following :—I begearnestly to call the attention of the inhabitants of Hawke's Bay to the necessity of some exertion being made, and that without delay, to improve and extend the road to the North, to enable the hard-pressed part of the population to drive their superfluous stock to the only market open to them. This is also worth the attention of the trading interest, if they expect to secure any of the business of the centre of the island. There is at this time a dray road nearly completed from Tauranga to Taupo Lake, and if something is not done by this Province, the merchants at Tauranga will have secured the trade to that port. I believe the Provincial Council voted £1,500 from the £60,000 Loan for this purpose, but fear it is too far from the Government Buildings for the authorities to exert themselves unless pressure is brought to bear. —I remain, yours, &c, Settler. Peb. 12, 18G9.
