MAJOR GREEN'S PROMOTION.
To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times. Sir, —On reading the New Zealand Gazette of the 29th January I came to the conclusion that the Colonial Government must have read Hart's Army List, and seen the record of valuable services rendered by Major Green to the Imperial Government; otherwise, I should imagine that Mr M'Lean haa regained his powerful influence with the present Ministry, •in securing, through his recommendation, the promotion of that gentleman the head of Major Carlyon, our late and highly respected commander of the Napier District. However, everyone will admit that the appointment is a judicious and well-deserved one, apart from the great claim Major Green has on the Province in general and on its Superintendent in particular, for services rendered of such manifold nature in his private (and no doubt military) capacity; as well as at the critical time when our noble Superintendent was collecting all the native arms—previously supplied by him —with which our allies fought so effectually at Wairoa andPuketapu.—l am,&c,, Quiz. Feb, 11, 1869.
