CANTERBURY.
Oirii files are to the 25th May. There is very little news. THE SUrt.RIXTEXUE.VCY. The nomination of candidates for the office of Superintendent of Canterbury took place at Christchurch on the 22ud of May. Mr Rollcston being the only candidate, was therefore declared to be duly elected. The livening Star considers “the Province is fortunate in obtaining the services of such a man as Mr Rollcston. Ilia good qualities are many and undeniable ; his faults few and very venial, lie is an honest man—“ painfully honest,” as wo heard a former colleague of his call him ; lie has plenty of courage to say “no” to what he docs not think rijit ; his ability is good, and his experience is equal to the demands which will be made upon it. Ho served in Canterbury at the head of tho Kxecutive for a considerable time, and ho proved himself an able administrator, and his experience at Wellington has improved his powers. He is a better worker than talker, and that means, in this case, that the Government officials will have to work hard or make room for those who will.’’
